  • POSITION SUMMARY

    The Janitorial Training Program is an intensive, 10–20 week paid internship program, depending on part-time or full-time availability. Three levels of training have been identified. A Janitorial Certificate will be given only for the completion of all levels. The focus of the program is on skill acquisition and development through a paid internship within Goodwill Industries Janitorial Training Department. The program will include skill development in obtaining the technical and soft skills of working. The Janitorial Training Program Participants will also be provided with case management services throughout the duration of the training program. Interns are assessed on a weekly basis. This role demonstrates behaviors consistent with our Mission, Vision and Values, on behalf of Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana.

     

    Internship Details

    The Janitorial Training Program targets individuals with barriers to employment, including those who have little or no prior work history, or a sporadic work history, and who have an interest in learning skills associated with janitorial/housekeeping work.

    Responsibilities

    • Location and hours: The Janitorial Program is offered at 1635 West Michigan Street. Hours of operation are 6 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
    • Building services: Participants must be able to clean restrooms, office areas, and common areas. Work performed must meet Goodwill quality standards. Participants will also develop the skills necessary to dust mop, damp mop, clean glass and windows, disinfect and spot clean carpets and walls, and perform chrome and general floor and carpet maintenance.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

    • For a candidate to be considered for training, the candidate will need to have an expressed interest in learning and be able to learn from lectures, videos, and demonstration of the practical application of techniques for proper cleaning.
    • An individual will need to have the necessary mobility, sight, manipulation and dexterity abilities to do basic office, general work area, and floor cleaning.
    • Candidates must pass a recent (within the last 3 months) Indiana State Police check prior to acceptance into the training program. The program will accept no pending felony charges or convictions.
    • The candidate will need to have his or her training funded (special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis).
    • Referrals will come directly to the case manager for pre-screening and interview. Upon recommendation, the program supervisor will conduct the candidate's second interview, and each candidate will complete a 2–4 hour unpaid job shadow prior to determining program enrollment.
    • Criminal history completed upon entrance into the program. Individuals cannot have any felony convictions associated with violent offense, sexual offense, theft, robbery, or fraud.
    • Must have reliable transportation.
    • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
    • Limited janitorial work experience (less than 6 months).
    • Must have basic language and math skills and the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
    • Physical demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to operate and control walk-behind and riding equipment such as scrubbing and buffing machines.
    • Work environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to potentially slippery floors and the moving mechanical parts of floor equipment. The employee will be exposed to dust, dirt, debris, and dust particles in the air. The noise level in the work environment is usually low.
