Senior Grants Accountant, GEI

The Senior Grants Accountant - GEI plays an integral role in the accounting department. The position will ensure all grant and contract management is financially sound and in compliance with all necessary internal controls and external regulations.


The Senior Grants Accountant - GEI will assume full responsibility for grant accounting and reporting, and will assist with budgeting and other general accounting functions as assigned.  Knowledge of current accounting concepts and principles related to nonprofit industries including but not limited to GAAP and A-133 audits is preferred.  The ability to play a key role in new and ongoing continuous process improvement initiatives is necessary.  Experience with government contracts and billing is preferred. The Senior Grants Accountant will be responsible for implementing new grant accounting and compliance as appropriate in accordance with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) requirements as outlined in the recently implemented Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards (Super Circular).  This role demonstrates behaviors consistent with our Mission, Vision and Values, on behalf of Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana.



  • Read agreements and determine appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Review grant and contract proposals.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable requirements and regulations.
  • Assist with budgets for grants and contracts.
  • Prepare monthly accounting entries for grants and contract billing.
  • Prepare invoices for contract billing.
  • Maintain all grant and contract billing schedules.
  • Actual versus budget reports by department and by specific program.
  • Prepare financial reports to grantors where required.
  • Provide timely reports and analyses to department leaders.
  • Prepare schedules for monthly close.
  • Prepare payroll journal entries and function as back-up to Payroll Manager.
  • Review and reconcile various general ledger accounts as assigned.
  • Assist the auditors in completion of the annual financial audits and A-133 audits.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required, advanced degree or certifications a plus
  • Minimum 2+ years related job experience in nonprofits or public accounting auditing of nonprofits is required
  • Thorough understanding of official GAAP accounting principles and A-133 audits is required
  • Strong general ledger skills are required
  • Familiarity with government contracts and billing is required
  • Solid working knowledge in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and ERP system
  • Excellent verbal and written skills; ability to interact comfortably with all levels of management
  • High degree of accuracy and timeliness in work
  • Deadline orientation required
  • Proactive individual, accustomed to taking initiative
